Shakuhachi

The Shakuhachi

A Shakuhachi is a japanese bamboo flute. Its the traditional instrument of the Fuke-shū which is a group of Ronin (former Samurais). They practiced shakuhachi playing as a form of zen meditation (similar to Ikebana, the work with flowers). The shakuhachi has been played alone and there were no concerts in the past.

Later the shakuhachi has been used together with other instruments. Three different schools are now important:  Kinko, Tozan und Myōan. Myōan is the most traditional one and is still in the vein of Fuke.

A Shakuhachi has a lenght of 54,5cm and is made of bamboo. These days Shakuhachis are also made of plastic or wood, but the special warm and extraordinary sound can only be reached with a bamboo flute.

To learn it, you need to attend a teacher (Sensei) because most of the knowledge can only learned face to face. Even books are not enough.
